Today we set up an LD50 Salinization Lab involving a bioassay which is attempting to find the toxicity level of salt water on radish seeds. We will collect our results and discuss the concept on Thursday.
One of the concepts in this unit is pre-consumer waste vs post-consumer waste. We explore that idea further today with an activity called Stuff: The Secret lives of Everyday Things. Students pick from a list of common products, read about the steps in it's production, and outline the processes and wastes generated. The purpose is to illustrate the amount of waste that is generated before a product even gets to a consumer.
UNIT 8 EXAM (FRQ + MATH)
We completed two Free Response Questions: a concept one and an energy calculation math one for our Unit 8 Exam. Students were given time to ask any questions they still had about the Energy Calculations Packet #2 so they could turn it in. So that we could put some more effort into energy calculations, I handed out 2 practice problems, one much more in-depth than the other. I encouraged them to work together so they can discuss how to set them up and can help each other work through them.
We finished the Chapter 13 PowerPoint by talking about geothermal and hydrogen power sources. I handed out a few articles from the gazette about the process of installing a geothermal heating/cooling system here at Kennedy 10 years ago. This will help students prepare for one of the Unit 8 FRQ options. We also had time to watch a short video explaining the electrical grid.
Both the articles and the video can be found on the assignments page. |
This blog explains what we did in class each day. Any files mentioned are available on the corresponding pages of our website.
